SONIC UNIVERSE Animated Adaptation series

Postby Darkspeeds » Sun Oct 09, 2011 11:04 am

Hey guys and gals! Elson 'Darkspeeds' Wong here, an avid Sonic fan and hobbyist of a comic artist since his being a young adult. = )

Just posting an initiative that I've been playing around for years since I've gotten myself into the Sonic Archie Comics. Nevertheless this is something that is based off the awesome SONIC UNIVERSE series created by the wonderful team at Archie Publications Inc.

The goal of my initiative is to inspire, entertain current fans of the comic series, and attract/encourage newbies into reading the comics.

How I do that is by finding spare time to create comic semi-animation styled adaptations of my favourite SONIC UNIVERSE arcs/scenarios and throw in a radio-play element to it (complete with quality voice-overs recordings, bgm and SFX).

So far this is the end product of a 2 week long project. Click on the image below to find out what I mean and begin the animated adaptation. Enjoy!

So yeah what do you guys and gals think? I'm sick of the inevitable where people just post FULL STORY ARCS on Youtube and just get recognition for free. People don't give enough credit to the original creators behind this masterful comic series that is SONIC UNIVERSE/Sonic the Hedgehog (Archie Comics).

So in saying that I'm hoping this video will inspire people to become more proactive in their approach in sharing the comic around online. They should think twice about posting the full contents of the comic/a particular issue.

I'm hoping that this proactive video series (containing a preview of the comic - say limiting to no more than 10-25% per arc in the SU series) will, more-so, encourage people to take interest in the comic series. Whether they are new to the series or have heard about it I'd like them to physically make an effort to make a purchase the contents either through online subscription (via i-Tunes/Graphicaly/Comixology) or at their local comic book store.

The reaction I aim for when newbies watch the video is: "Hey! This looks pretty darn cool, I want to go and check it out at the comic store!". Personally I've been subscribing at Perth's 'Quality Comics' shop for a few years now and I'm darn proud to earn my own wage to pay for the comics entertainment that I look forward to every end of the month.

In addition to my discussion of 'making an effort' for the comic reader - walking to your local comic book store is a great excuse for some fresh air and some much needed daily exercise. You even get the opportunity to talk to someone about comics and the latest happenin's in the comics world!

It's all about being proactive guys and gals and doing the right thing.

Anyways, any feedback is most welcomed on the video or anything else I've discussed! Also please do not hesitate to ask me questions about the project either (voice-over auditions, how the animation process works, what is involved in creating a the visuals/audio etc...)! I'll be happy to answer your questions.

Finally, I'm currently working on the 'second act' already as we speak. "ALL HAIL THE KING BABBEEY!"

Kind regards,

Elson 'Darkspeeds' Wong

P.S. Hey did you guys and gals managed to catch up with Ian Flynn or Paul Kaminski at Comic Con this year? Be sure to show them your support at New York Con on 16th October 2011. I had a really awesome time catching up with them a couple of months ago. Don't be shy to do something proactive! Get out there and have a great time!

This is pretty well done! You didn't have mucn to work with, but the motion came out nicely.

Welcome to the forums, also.

This. Is. Epic! Excellent job on the voice acting. I really enjoyed listening to Edmund's voice. I can't wait to hear how the Dark Mobius Freedom Fighters sound.
And the sound effects sounded fantastic. I find it awesome how you guys managed to add in the Genesis sound effects as well.
I have two questions about this project:
1. Where did you find the backround music and sound effects?
2. Will you be doing other arcs, like Scourge: Lock-Down and Treasure Team Tango?
Keep up the good work! :D

@ Ultimate - Thank you kindly for your feedback as well as your warm welcome! I really appreciate it.

@ EnerJack - This project was ALOT of fun to do. This was a one-man operation with the exception of Kovabomb brilliantly contributing his voice-overs for the characters I had requested for him to play in the animated adaptation. He was also an inspiration upon my discovery of him just 2 weeks ago on Youtube - why so? He did the same thing making a moving picture + radio drama with the Sonic Comics in which he defines them as 'Comic Dramas'. The scenes he did were bloomin' fantastic - do me a favour and check out his outstanding Sonic Archie 'Comic Dramas'. http://www.youtube.com/user/Kovabomb

To answer your questions:

i) It was from a collection of music and sfx's I've collected over a period of 10 years. In the credits you'll see that I've utilised SFX's ranging from AbsoluteSFX.com, Sounddogs.com and SEGA/Sonic Team (a lot of it came from Sonic Heroes and Sonic 3 & Knuckles). With regards to music I seem to have a nack for combining the right instrumentals/BGMs to certain scenes or moments to a comic drama, I'm really pleased with the selection used on SILVER SAGA.

ii) I wonder if people actually bother looking at the credits? (hearty laughter) XD Nevertheless towards the end you'll hear Kovabomb doing a fantastic voice-over of Scourge The Hedgehog. The ending sequence complete with Scourge's trademark quote: "All hail the king baby!" foreshadows my plans for the next 'Act' to be portrayed... I wonder which one...?

Nevertheless EnerJack thank you so kindly for asking me questions and also your generous feedback about the outcome of this video. *thumbs up*

I know this is for Sonic Universe, but could you do one on Sonic Genesis? It's a four part arc, simmiliar to SU...

Well, I'll leave it to see if anyone likes the idea. :D

@ Ultimate - Maybe! Thanks for suggesting. Right at the moment I have my eyes set on a fan favourite arc in the SONIC UNIVERSE, so many friends and fans came to me saying that they love it - I couldn't agree more!

@ FairFieldFinder - Cheers!

Darkspeeds~!

Very slick. What software did you use for your editing and effects? Sorry if it's listed in the credits, I haven't had time to watch the whole thing.

This is quite inspiring, I think making trailers (ala the Megaman comic one) for some of the major arcs over the years of the comic would be fun.
I may give that a try.

I think that advertisement you put half way through the video could've gone at the end, but otherwise, I was really impressed by this. It reminds me of these old things for some reason.

@ FairFieldFinder: You probably did! Though I haven't found your name in any of the credits to his videos.

@ GameBuddy: Yo GameBuddy! It's cool to see you here.

I used Audacity and a Samson C03 for the vocal recordings and audio production, Adobe Photoshop for the art editing and creation, and Camtasia Studios for the video editing process.

Glad to have inspired. I've listened to your demo reels, they were really entertaining to listen to! = )

I highly encourage you to do what you have suggested regarding the trailers - you've got the talent, time and energy. I look forward to it should it be completed anytime in the near future! *thumbs up*

@ squeakyboots13: Cheers for the suggestion on the placement of the ad. Goodness me! That video you linked to me is classic! ^^

@ Crimson Knight: Thanks for the welcome! It's been a crazy couple of days so far, I've got so many comments to reply to! X_x; XD But yeah I'm really excited for the next act which will feature Scourge and his gang... Time to make haste and get workin' on it already! ;)

@ jkcool, SHRRN A FWOOSH! & Darkfox: Why thank you guys and gals. I'm in the middle of making preparations for Act 2 - it's going to be jam-packed with awesomeness and 'way past cool'. Promise. ;)
